FDNY responds to fire inside Waldorf Astoria

A small fire broke out in the basement of the famed Waldorf Astoria hotel early Thursday, the FDNY said.

Insulation in a basement wall started to smoke and smolder around 4:22 a.m. and 78 firefighters rushed to the scene to put it out, officials said.

The fire was under control by 5:03 a.m. and no one was injured, the FDNY said.

The legendary, 5-star hotel was recently purchased by a Chinese investor but was soon put under control of the Chinese government after the investor was arrested and thrown in jail on fraud charges. It had been undergoing a massive renovation project. It is not immediately clear if that had anything to do with the fire.

The hotel did not immediately return a request for comment.
