On Thursday, September 6, FDNY Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro added the names of 18 members who died of illnesses related to their work in the World Trade Center rescue and recovery efforts to the World Trade Center Memorial Wall at FDNY Headquarters in Brooklyn. A total of 177 FDNY members are now listed on the World Trade Center Memorial Wall, which was unveiled in September 2011. “The loss of life for our Department on September 11th was staggering. But, so too is seeing this list of heroes grow year after year with no end in sight. I believe when all is said and done, we may very well lose even more people to World Trade Center illness than we lost at the attack on the World Trade Center itself. It’s almost inconceivable to imagine that our Department, which suffered the deaths of 343 extraordinary people, would somehow be forced to deal with so much more pain, suffering and loss,” said Commissioner Nigro. “But today is not a day to mourn. This is a day to remember and honor these incredible people who took part in an unprecedented rescue and recovery effort for our Department.”
The inscription on the World Trade Center Memorial Wall reads: “Dedicated to the memory of those who bravely served this Department protecting life and property in the City of New York in the rescue and recovery effort at Manhattan BOX 5-5-8087 WORLD TRADE CENTER”
